How Long Do Mattresses Last?

Nothing beats a good night’s sleep, and we know that a well-rested person is a productive individual. Many things come into play in ensuring that one has a good night’s sleep, from what you ate for supper to what you’re wearing. But most importantly, what kind of mattresses you are sleeping on at night (or daytime).

According to Sleep underground, It is a vital factor since what you are sleeping on provides comfort and thus impacts the general sleep quality that one will experience. As such, it’s important to note that the mattresses we sleep on should be of some level of quality to guarantee us a good night’s sleep.

When referring to the lifespan of mattresses, it is essential to note that the average lifespan of foam mattresses is 10-20 years, whereas innerspring mattresses last for about 10-15 years. But it’s dependent on many other factors.

And it is also important to note that stating how long a mattress should last is different from how long the mattress does last. This is because mattresses, just like every other household item, deteriorate with time.

Several factors come into play when talking about the lifespan of mattresses, and the type of bed isn’t one of them. As long as the mattress fits the bed and does not slide out of it, then there is no further impact that the bed has. Some of these reasons may include the quality of material used, verbosity of use, and the care and maintenance of mattresses.

But to understand this better, we have to note that there are different kinds of mattresses marketed worldwide and are made up of various forms; some are hybrid, and some are mixtures of the regular standard foam.

So to understand this better, it’s important to look at some of these mattresses and the lifespan of each one while it’s still expected to offer quality and comfortable sleep.

How Long Do Mattresses Last?

The Lifespan of the Innerspring Mattress

The lifespan of an innerspring bed is mainly dependent on the thickness of the spring. As a result, it’s not practically possible to accurately predict the lifespan of this kind of mattress. A spring coil can be used in this mattress in different ways as well.

Continuous Springs

One continuous steel wire running from head to toe of each coil creates a spring. This means that all coils and not individual coils absorb the person’s weight using the mattress; the coils work as a unit.

Pocket Coil

Regarding this kind, the springs work independently of each other, and the support of each coil is distributed to the main parts that require this support—namely, hips, shoulders, knees, and head.

Open Coils

Also known as the Bonnell coils, its manufacture is similar to the hourglass coil linking a spiral wire that runs from the top to the bottom, thus connecting each coil.

For couples who fancy a bouncy bed that’s usually useful for sex, then the Innerspring mattress is the best choice. We can’t just keep the conversation of mattresses on sleep alone; we know it serves another role, and as such, it wins on the latter.

But depending on how often it is used, the spring mattresses tend to have a shorter lifespan. The springs weaken, and the mattress ends up sagging, especially in contact points and pressure points.

The lifespan of Latex Foam Mattresses

When people are asked, a majority will say that this kind of mattress, compared to the spring mattress, has a shorter lifespan, but this isn’t usually the case. A latex foam mattress has a longer lifespan and has layers of foam that can be replaced when need be.

The downside is that this mattress leaves a permanent impression of the user’s sleeping body shape. But it doesn’t generally mean that it has exhausted its use.

The lifespan of Memory Foam Mattress

Compared to the two mentioned above, the memory foam mattress lasts much longer; that being said, it also wears out after a given period. This mattress conforms to the user’s sleeping position, and the downward side of this is it cannot regain its original flatness.

The Lifespan of Air Mattress

When referring to the longevity of this kind of mattress, it stands out from the rest because you can repair it. But it also has a record of poor durability as it is susceptible to punctures and what have you.

Why Do You Need to Replace Your Mattress?

It’s essential to replace your mattress just like any other item in your house. But what guides this includes some of the following reasons:

If You’ve Used it For 7 to 10 Years

When it comes to mattresses, the thumb rule is you should replace them after 7-10 years of service. But depending on the mattress, one can get up to 15 years, but it doesn’t often go past that.

Dirt that You Can’t Remove

The other thing that forces one to replace a mattress is that it has one of those stains that can’t seem to go away even after a thorough cleaning. It may be from liquids poured by the young ones, and when this happens, we have to replace it.

Saggy Mattress

Especially if it is the Inner Spring Mattress, a saggy mattress has to get replaced. For comfort and also a neat-looking bed, a saggy mattress has to go.

You Wake Up in Pain

If you have found yourself waking up in pain and feeling tired and in extreme conditions, feel better when sleeping on a hotel bed or guest bed. Then it’s time to buy a new mattress and get rid of the old one that is causing all the discomfort.

Allergic Reactions

If you are experiencing allergic reactions when you decide to sleep, then that mattress may be the cause of your problems, especially if it’s aged, torn, or worn out.

How To Make Your Mattress Last Longer?

When you want your mattress to last longer, then its key to follow a few of the following general practices:

  • Air the Mattress
  • Rotate the Mattress after every 3-6 months
